Great for class

History chapter is lousy--bloopers on Mary Seacole from failure to use good sources

Whatever the merits of this book are generally, there are terrible bloopers in the history chapter
The chapter, by Lundy, has a number of errors of fact in it on Mary Seacole. The coverage is short, but shows that the author fell for the shoddy secondary literature, and failed to consult any primary source, not even Seacole’s own fascinating memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands, 1857. A look at it suffices to show where Lundy went wrong.
Lundy is also wrong on Nightingale opposing germ theory (p. 19), a mistake frequently made by people who don’t bother to read Nightingale herself, or who look only at her writing before germ theory existed--her Notes on Nursing, 1860, and Notes on Hospitals, 1863, predate it. She came to accept it after Robert Koch’s breakthrough research on cholera in India in 1883. Her nursing school taught a rudimentary form of germ theory as early as 1873, that is, pre-Koch, but after Pasteur and Lister (see Lynn McDonald, Florence Nightingale: The Nightingale School pp. 13-21).
1. Why call Seacole an “African nurse” at all? She never identified as African, but called herself “Creole,” praising her Scottish heritage and distancing herself from the “lazy Creole” image (pp. 1-2). She was three quarters white, had a white husband, white business partner and a white clientele. Like well-off white Jamaicans, she employed blacks. She travelled with two black servants, Mac and Mary (pp. 36-7). In the Crimea she had black cooks, “my good-for-nothing black cooks” (p. 141).
2. Seacole’s own book explains that, when regiments in Jamaica began to move to “the East” (Turkey, not yet the Crimea), she did not go to volunteer, but returned to Panama on business (Chapters 7 and 8). She did not, even later, “volunteer her services without pay” but went to London in the autumn to attend to her failing Panamanian gold stocks (p. 74), then, after about two months, began to look for a position as “hospital nurse” (p. 76).
3. Why say that Nightingale was “unwilling to hire Seacole”? Seacole never applied! and Nightingale was already nursing at the Barrack Hospital in Scutari when Seacole decided she would try for a job. Rather late. Not only had Nightingale and her team left, which Seacole acknowledges in her book (p. 78), the second team likely had already left, too (she did not give a date for when she started her job search, but the second group left on 2 December 1854 and she did not decide to go until on or after 30 November).
4. Seacole did not “set up an inn with her own money that provided food and lodging for soldiers and their families near Scutari.” According to her book she set up a hut, which she called the “British Hotel,” but, since it took no overnight stays, was not. Rather it was a restaurant/bar/store/takeaway/catering service for officers, not soldiers. The prices were well what soldiers could pay, and officers and soldiers did not mix socially. Seacole provided a separate “canteen for the soldiery” (p. 114), but did not say what was sold there. Her own advertising for the business specified “officers of the Army and Navy” (p. 81).
5. What “contributions to nursing” did Seacole make? She ran a much-appreciated business. She visited soldiers at the Land Transport Corps Hospital near her hut, and took around magazines donated by officers to them--kind acts. At New Year’s 1855 she took the patients there plum pudding and mince pies (p. 185). She did first aid work, post-battle, on three occasions--for officers and soldiers alike. She deserves commendation for this, but why exaggerate it? Seacole never worked a day in her life in a hospital, and her (much-appreciated) first-aid forays amounted to hours, not days, on three days over a two-year war.
Seacole did not call herself a “nurse,” a term she used for Nightingale and her nurses, but used “doctress, nurse and mother” for herself (p. 124).
Finally, why should Mrs Seacole, a decent, fine, generous businesswoman, be as well known as Nightingale, who led the first team of British women to nurse in war, founded a nursing school, brought professional nursing into the dreaded workhouse infirmaries, and worked to improve hospitals and public health care for the rest of her life?
Mrs Seacole’s life has been hijacked for political propaganda. Diversity, and the promotion of black and other minority nurses, is a good thing. Why not get genuine minority nursing leaders to celebrate, and do this with high standards of research?

The person that edited this book needs to be fired

The material itself of the book is very interesting. However the editing of this book is incredibly poor. Some of the paragraphs are so poorly written throughout the book, that it is quite sad that that sort of writing would make it through the editing process. I would even read the paragraphs out loud to my husband, just to make sure it was not my reading comprehension that was failing, clearly not, they just didn't make any sense.
