A Neglected Classic

This is a fascinating history of Chivalry, drawn from a massive array of source materials. It is also the source of the famous "Ten Commandments of Chivalry", compiled by Gautier as a synthesis of the ideals that motivated a true knight. This book presents knighthood as an ideal, not as a Romantic notion; a way of virtue rather than a complex system of stilted behaviors. Some may challenge his scholarship, perhaps. Some may question his idealistic portrayal. But Gautier does not pretend that all knights followed Chivalry as he describes it; all he is trying to show is that there was an ideal, whether or not men lived up to it, and that this ideal still has relevance and value for our times. And that is a conclusion worth pondering. This book is unjustly forgotten. A fine work to help us revive the spirit of true chivalry.
