A majestic translation of one of the Nobel Prize-winning masters of twentieth-century poetry.
Hailed as one of the key poets of the modern era, Eugenio Montale changed Italian poetry forever and helped to create international Modernism. Steeped in the tradition of Dante, Petrarch, and Leopardi, yet fiercely innovative, in each new book Montale challenged the styles he had previously established. His poems chart an adventure of consciousness and conscience in response to the shocks of modernity, fascism, and two world wars, and they also present several of the greatest erotic sequences in modern poetry.
The Collected Poems of Eugenio Montale publishes for the first time in English William Arrowsmith’s pellucid translations of Poetic Diary 1971, 1972, and the Poetic Notebook, as well as his previously published translations of four volumes: Cuttlefish Bones, The Occasions, The Storm and Other Things, and Satura. With the wide range of Montale’s poetry at last available to the English reader, this collection reveals Montale to be the greatest Italian poet of the twentieth century.

*Starred Review* Besides the ancient Greeks, classicist William Arrowsmith (1924–92) loved modern Italian literature. He translated all the poetry of the archetypal Italian modernist Montale (1896–1981) that emerged before his own death. Arrowsmith also critically annotated his translations, revealing not only Montale’s poetical inspirations and philosophical aims but also the cogent opinions of the best Montale critics. This volume corrals all the translations and much of the notes and, with editor Warren’s startlingly economical (because so informative) introduction and the Italian texts of the poems across the gutter from the translations, opens Montale to Anglophone readers definitively. Montale has a reputation for difficulty, but Arrowsmith’s renderings are remarkably accessible and, for those who can sufficiently glom the Italian, seem utterly faithful. They can be pleasurably read without Warren’s and Arrowsmith’s elucidations (though even more pleasurably with them), for they manifest the sharp imagery, the simplicity of diction (Montale regretted the polysyllabicalism of basic Italian; no such problem with English), and the progressive clarification of voice, consciously approaching that of plain prose, that typify the unfolding poetic practice of, say, W. C. Williams among great American modernists. And Montale lived and wrote in a far more beautiful landscape (often the Italian Riviera), though sometimes amid much greater troubles (Mussolini’s fascism). --Ray Olson

Beautiful, big, well-translated.
By JAL
This is a fantastic translation - Wm. Arrowsmith spent the last years of his life translating Montale's work so that more of the English-speaking world could read it. The collection is very comprehensive, with much appreciated notes by the translator at the end, and with a well-organized index listing titles in both English and Italian. Intro by Rosanna Warren is helpful, too. Having the Italian and English versions of the poem on facing pages is great. The book has heft- literally and metaphorically, and it's well-designed, with a lovely choice of paper - the whole thing is a pleasure to hold and read. Quality choices in desgin do make a difference in a book you want to keep forever, though best of all is that wonderful voice of Montale coming through loud and clear! Just read his poem, "The Lemon Tree" - so beautiful!!

Translating Montale
By John Lederman
Montale's poetry is truly gorgeous. There are now a couple of English translations and they are fairly different.
I read the Galassi translation (1998), first, and found some things which lead to this review. A fair amount of the English in the Montale/Galassi 1998 edition seems neither grammatically correct nor suitably imagistic. Some of the language seemed awkward. I wondered about mis-spellings, mis-translations. My Google Italian translator said "lameggia" (pg. 94) ought to be "lampeggia" = "flashes" and to me "flashes" is far more poetically evocative than the translation chosen, "shines". The next couple of lines seem rather irrationally broken, which changes them, from the Italian. The word "beata", which has been translated as "happily", should, I think, more properly be "blessedly" giving the poem (Maestrale/Mistral) a whole different meaning. In the second line of the poem the word "maretta" meaning "swell(s)" makes far more sense than the word used, "choppy". This was the word that seemed so odd to me initially. Anyone who has spent time by the sea knows that a "choppy" sea does not "talk among the rocks" and has a very different sound, but a swelling sea, like breathing, moves among rocks, and makes a different sound which does sound like "talk". There is more even just in this poem, but this is sufficient here.
The Montale/Arrowsmith edition too has the word "lameggia," but still, a Google search completely rejects this word over the entire web except to this poem, and searches for, alternatively "lampeggia." Puzzling. The Arrowsmith translation I think is better: "The vast expanse / billows in the brightness, wrinkles, subsides..." (although why he has changed the order in which Montale wrote it, I don't see either, from "In the brightness / the vast expanse billows, wrinkles, subsides..." which has a much better sense of flow (and "beata" has become "serene" and "maretta" has become 'waves,' not ideal).
The notes at the back of the Montale/Galassi 1998 book are alright I suppose, as far as they go, but they seem rather academic in a dry detached kind of way. There is no table of contents of poems. Seems ridiculous. There is an index of titles and first lines at the back, but it is missing the poem I refer to above "The Agave On The Reef" although the index does contain the sections of that poem: Scirocco, Tramontana, and Maestrale. Perhaps these are corrected in the 2012 revised edition which is 15 pages longer. Collected Poems, 1920-1954: Revised Bilingual Edition (Italian Edition) At some point I will look at the revised 2012 edition and update these comments.
The accompanying notes in the Montale/Arrowsmith are better designed to be found and have their own poetic evocations. There is a table of contents and an alphabetized index of titles and first lines, all of which makes the writing more accessible. These are all editing, design, and layout decisions that contribute to the difficulty or ease of finding and accessing individual poems and the notes, all of which contributes to the difficulty or ease a reader has connecting with the poems, which, I think, is what poetry and its language is all about, connecting.
Poetry in translation is always very difficult. I would recommend do some investigating first and chose your preference. While I prefer the Arrowsmith translation and it seems to flow more, the Galassi has words and phrases that stir different images in me and ultimately I like a translation that is sometimes a mix of the two, sometimes my own, making it all worthwhile. If you are keen on Montale, or any foreign language poet, you will benefit if you spend some time working some of it out with a dictionary yourself. It is worth the effort and will enrich your experience and your life, and isn't that what poetry is supposed to do?
