Pretentious and unreal.

This book was so annoying that I could only read a few chapters. The writing was flowery and stilted. The vocabulary in the dialogues bore little resemblance to how people actually speak. Early on I found myself skipping whole paragraphs out of boredom. I called it quits when she was preparing to teach another inmate to read. Her smug, condescending attitude and the child-like adoration of the other woman for her was unbelievable. I disliked the main character, which doesn't make for a pleasant read.
A woman being psychologically and physically abused does not present as this woman did. I found it lacked credibility and makes me wonder about the integrity of the writer.

Harrowing - but a must read!

I started reading this book knowing it was going to be about domestic violence but had no idea just how harrowing a read it was going to be. The first quarter of the book is a little slow but necessary to understand Kate's life later in the book , when she reflects her previous life with her husband Mark.
At times I struggled to continue reading some of the detailed chapters as the story is explicit and fearful. Yet other times I couldn't put the book down because I was desperate to know the outcome. The cliche 'You never know what goes on behind closed doors' is a true description of this book.

A very promising new author. I will definitely read more of her work!

Extremely well written but not realistic

The reason why I cannot give this book 5 stars is because, despite it being extremely well written, I'm not sure how realistic it is for a smart intelligent and educated woman in the 21st century to silently tolerate such a high level of abuse. With helplines, and internet support I cannot believe she had not explored other ways out of her unendurable situation. Even though I can understand her reasons for killing her brute of a husband, it may have been better to have exposed the man he really was to the outside world and have him sent to prison. I can understand the anger her children felt towards her as they knew nothing of the abuse, it may have been better if she had at least confided in them about it first. Despite all this, it was a harrowing story and it was written very well.

About the Author:
Dr. Duane Knudson is Associate Dean and Professor of biomechanics in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Chico.� He earned his Ph.D. in biomechanics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has published extensively on the biomechanics of tennis and exercise.� Dr. Knudson co-authored the first scholarly book on the qualitative analysis of human movement, and his research has earned him fellow status in the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of AAHPERD.

READ! It's FANTASTIC Great examples and advice!

I LOVE Heather's insight. Always. I struggled the first time with anxiety a couple months ago and her lack of sugar coating always makes for GREAT advice. It's nice that we can learn from each other's experiences, especially when the experiences are beautifully worded in a way that's easy to apply to your own. Fantastic book!

Great tips, but could use some editing

I felt this book was well presented and gave awesome concrete tips. My only critique is that there are a couple spelling mistakes and sometimes the message seems to jump from one topic to another, making it a tad confusing at times.

Don't Get This Version!

Upon opening the book, it is obvious this book was printed as cheaply as possible. There are many typos in the text, and after reading a page once, the page will fall out of the binding. I'm now halfway through the book and have half a textbook and half a ream of paper.

Instead, look for a version printed on glossy paper. This version doesn't have any of the same problems as this version.

This book is almost a scam with how much they charge for such an unacceptable printing quality. Do not purchase!

No CD?!

I just bought a new copy of the book directly from Amazon for a class, but it didn't come with the CD. The Amazon description does not mention a CD (however, under the "Editorial Review" heading, the CD is noted as optional, whatever that means), but the book says that it comes with a free CD (page xix). The CD is required for my class so I contacted Amazon today and I'll update this comment after I get their response. The CD is also available for purchase through the publisher website for about $25, but I don't want to pay that if it is supposed to be free with the book. This is the ninth edition of the book, but the eighth edition of the book is also available on Amazon with the CD explicitly in the description.

Update: Amazon replaced the book for free with no hassle, but the second book did not include a CD either. Apparently, Amazon direct does not include the CD, so if you need the CD, don't buy it from them. I'll be getting a refund and I'll be emailing other sellers to see if they sell the book with the CD.

Horribly written, many spelling errors, worse binding ever

I know that this review will not affect the students that have to purchase the book for a class, so I am instead hoping that professors will read this review and pick a different textbook for their class. As such, I will go in depth to show exactly where are my grievances.
As a senior in college that always reads the textbook, I can honestly say that this book is by far the worse book I have ever purchased. Rather than have you just take my word for it, I will break down exactly what is wrong with this book and then give you examples.
First, the binding of this book is the worst I have ever experienced. I started with a book and, by the end of the semester, I had a ream of worthless paper. Every time I turned the page, it ended up falling out. When I pay for a book, especially a textbook that cost $75, I expect for it to last a lifetime. I know that I will not use this book in my future career, but it should last longer than one read through. Sometime I hadn't even read the pages yet and the ones from farther in the book would fall out. Such a waste of money.
My grievances did not stop here. Occasionally, the text will run off the page and leave the reader wondering what happened to the sentence. Excellent examples from my book are in chapter 4, pages 123, 129 and 131, and chapter 3 page 113. The margins are so off on this page that the writing at the top does not start until an inch down the page and it ends up running off the bottom. This happens a few other times in the book.
Also, the fonts will randomly change in the book. Sometimes, this happens in the middle of a paragraph and will last a few pages. On page 202 it seems like the book randomly starts to become double spaced and then the next page it goes back to normal. There were also a few times in the book where the font would suddenly become a few sizes smaller and then last that way for a few paragraphs or pages. I couldn't find this a second time in different areas, but I showed it to a few people when I read it the first time and even they couldn't believe the lack of revision and double checking. The only example I could find was on page 93 where there is normal font, but the sentence continues on page 94 where the font decreased. On this page, the font randomly changes size but then returns to normal on the following page (number 95).
Now to talk more about this lack of double checking. Many times the paragraphs have not been indented. For example, on pages 100-101, there are three paragraphs that have not been indented. Page 7 has zero indented paragraphs. There are also spelling errors like page 6 "The fi lmakers" This continues throughout the book. This lack of unity actually detracts from the reading of the book.
Finally, the worst part of the book which severely detracts are the spelling errors. The spelling errors create problems with comprehension for the reader. I can literally quote the book and then fail a test because the spelling errors happen for some of the major subjects of the book. For example, on page 236 we learn about the 180 degree system... except the book wrongly calls it "Spatial Continuity: The 18 degree system." If I put 18 degree system on my test, then I will fail. This is a huge concept in the chapter and will undoubtedly be tested but still contains spelling errors. Also on page 58: "Very often people think of 'farm' as the opposite of something called 'content.'" Farm? Oh, you mean form. Yeah, the major concept that you are just now introducing to the students is misspelled. Even the quotes seem odd, like page 231 from Dziga Vertov needs to have its grammar checked. If you quote a foreign speaker, you could at least make sure he uses correct grammar or you could paraphrase him.
All of these spelling errors and continuity problems causes the reader to lose focus. That is the opposite of what a textbook should do. Sometimes, I would end up getting a pen and start marking the spelling errors or grammar problems. I would easily find 20 errors per page and I am not even a English major nor am I a grammar Nazi. I am a Spanish and Zoology major and these errors are readily apparent. These are the reasons why this textbook should not be assigned for any class. Please, for the sake of your future students, pick a book that does not contain problems like this. Sure the content is fine, but the grammar, spelling and style errors detracts from the book to a point where learning is just not possible.

With Rybak, a former Duke employee, celebrity biographer Schwarz has done a competent job, but not everyone would speak to him, and the book becomes repetitive in the final chapters. Those looking for a solution to the puzzle of Duke's death?by an overdose of morphine at age 80, in 1993?won't find it here, but they will be given enough information to draw their own conclusions. The most interesting revelation in this "poor little rich girl" bio is that a 1917 study on the fatal long-term effects of cigarettes was destroyed by Doris's father, Buck Duke (another victim of a bizarre death). Depending on your interpretation of glamorous, this book could be more appropriately titled The Bizarre Life and Bizarre Death of Doris Duke. Born in 1912 to an unhappy union between a tobacco baron and his coldhearted, mean-spirited wife, Duke lost her father in early childhood, leaving her an unimaginable fortune estimated at her recent death as being more than $3 billion. After her father's death, which her mother was apparently instrumental in causing, Duke gradually won her independence from her mother and embarked on a life of failed marriages, sleazy affairs, drug and alcohol dependency, sensationally bizarre acts (like adopting a 35-year-old woman), trying out new religions, and jet-setting between her three exclusive properties. Duke died in her late 70s, and her death, shrouded in mystery, has been the subject of much speculation and innuendo. This book, while rendering a concise, if extremely dark, portrayal of the lives of the very wealthy, leaves the reader with the feeling of witnessing a bad car accident, horrified and repulsed yet somehow transfixed. Another go at the story of billionaire heiress Doris Duke that raises more questions than it answers about her life, her death, and her last will and testament. Schwarz (Rose Kennedy: A Life of Faith, Family, and Tragedy, 1995) tries to take a more evenhanded approach to Duke's life story than last year's trashing by her cousin Pony Duke in Too Rich: The Family Secrets of Doris Duke. Coauthor Rybak worked for about two years as Duke's personal chef and was also partly responsible for the hiring of the infamous butler, the late Bernard Lafferty, who supervised--and perhaps helped to hasten- -Duke's death in 1993 at age 80. According to the authors, Duke's father, Buck, was the primary influence in her life, the man who taught Doris to ``trust no one'' and passed on his own obsessions: sex, money, and agriculture. As to sex, Doris's lovers were numerous and varied, from her first husband, the well-bred but financially strapped Jimmy Cromwell, to the jazz pianist Joey Castro. As for money and agriculture, Doris nurtured the Duke fortune from millions to billions and along the way became a botanical expert, specializing in orchids. She was also an accomplished jazz pianist with some recordings to her credit. Although Duke gets recognition for her accomplishments, including her expertise in Eastern art, this biography indulges heavily in speculation about family crimes, including several ``murders.'' Credibility shrinks from sloppy inconsistencies and offensive characterizations, such as the description of Irish immigrants as ``drinking, dancing and brawling.'' The book ends with long, unenlightening excerpts from civil and criminal investigations relating to Duke's death and her will, and peculiar paeans to an attorney representing some Duke employees. Trust No One

After touring Doris Duke's summer home in Newport, RI, I became increasing intrigued with Ms. Duke. So I sought a book about her life and I came across Trust No One. At first, I felt the initial chapters were plodding and dry, but I realized after reading a few chapters this foundation was needed to understand the woman Doris Duke became. The first chapters did a thorough background on Doris' father and mother, Buck and Nanaline Duke. Doris' father was the love of her life and he taught her how to become an astute business woman before he died when she was 13 years old. Doris Duke was a very complex woman. She was a philanthropist, and a very saavy businesswoman who multiplied her fortune by billions. She was also an avid art collector, a self-taught botanist and, last but not least, a fine jazz musician. Doris was also very flawed: she was an alcoholic; a drug abuser; and, was anorexic. All of this is explained in great detail in the book. It was factual, but yet there was a human side to the story, and I found it to be a great read. In the end, money cannot buy happiness or love - not even for Doris Duke. (Written by Kathee Duncan)

Sort of interesting....

Interesting, up to a point. When I started to read a lot of might haves, maybes, and reportedly, I questioned the validity of a lot of the book. Seemed based on gossip, along with a few facts thrown in. The author didn't seem to like Doris very much. I was hoping for a fact-based book, but not sure this was it.

Doris Disappointment

The only reason I gave this one a '2' was that it's a very interesting look into Doris Duke's life with alot of insider perspective(one of the co-writers was her chef). However, this book looks entirely unedited and had atrocious spelling, grammer, mistakes ALL OVER and it was unacceptable.

BIGGEST EXAMPLE: The author's name is spelled differently on the front cover and side binding. Was there ANYONE proofreading this book?

Doris' was constantly spelled Doris'ss or Doris's and words didn't have spaces in between them.

    Practical, Insightful, and One-of-a-Kind

    In "90 Days, 90 Ways" Alexia Vernon expertly details how Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000; also known as "Generation Y") fit into today's corporate structure. Too often, a good amount of workplace anxiety, misunderstandings, and clashes are the result of two generations (with two very different sets of values) not understanding where the other one is coming from.

    Any manager or HR professional who picks up this book will essentially have special access to a Millennial's mind as they begin a new job. This is a tremendous advantage, since having this knowledge will result in Millennial employees feeling valued, respected, understood, and listened to -- the perfect formula for a motivated and contributing team member. If, upon reading this book, you realize your company doesn't onboard young professionals in this manner, you'll definitely want to change that soon!

    Despite being rich in content, the book is an easy read thanks to Ms. Vernon's approachable, friendly, and often humorous tone that disperses pop culture references throughout.

Alexia Vernon's fresh perspective gives readers a solid approach on how to get young professionals smoothly integrated into their organizations. Written from the perspective of a Millennial herself, Alexia's valuable insight is what makes this book stand out from the rest. And by breaking down the tips and advice within the 90-day structure of onboarding, it is easy to apply these strategies to an actual program! This book will help anyone understand Millenials better, and learn how to keep this great talent in their organizations.

    EKG sample number quoted can not reached easily, and has to flip several pages to view ,and search back to text
    EKG are too small to view and not live size

    This book is simply awesome. It explains the matter in a way that it sticks but never sounding like it is written for children or retards.
    The book consists of three parts interwoven throughout the book. For beginners start with Blue level one and only do the parts marked Level One, once you mastered that basic understanding you return to the start of the book and go on with the parts marked Level Two with more in depth knowledge, after that return to the beginning again for part three, Level Three, in depth advanced knowledge is where its at at Level Three.
    I utterly enjoy this book, I keep picking it up again to read another part en enjoy the notion that i actually get it!
    It is rather an expensive book compared to so many other Cardio books out there and i have many of them at home but this one is worth every penny and i could have done without all the other books had i found this one earlier.
    Go get it!

    If you want to really understand EKGs and be a complete boss whenever an EKG needs to be read, then get this book. I do not like the "review" style books even though sometimes they are necessary if you are short on time. But if you have the time, and really for a book as great as this you should make the time, then get this and truly understand EKGs. I hated the feeling of trepidation when seeing EKGs in the past. Now I see them and it's actually "fun" and I feel confident rather than apprehensive. 5/5
