He lost everything to a human serial killer and now Joseph Bennett’s only thoughts are of revenge and death until she appears in the dead of night and changes everything in this riveting paranormal romance.

Paige Williams has remained silent about her brother’s crimes for years but she can’t keep her secrets any longer and the reader can’t help but get pulled into the story as Paige and Joseph decide to take action – one from which they’ll either emerge whole…or dead. The chemistry is a smoldering inferno of heat but this relationship is slow burning because of personal demons and emotional distress and these strong, compelling characters draw readers in and capture their hearts while they finally begin to hope for more while the fast paced, smooth flowing plot captivates readers with lots of suspense, turmoil and romance.

Pulse-pounding tension builds throughout the story as Paige takes potentially deadly risks to right her past while Joseph tries put off his revenge to help her while the excitement builds as the danger escalates and the killer begins to stalk them with some unexpected twists and the council adding additional spicy tension. The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and bring the story to life while the intriguing events keep readers glued to the pages.

I have to tell you that other than the first book in this series, I haven’t read any of the other previous stories but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this one although it does have the spoilers for book two, it also wetted my appetite for more and since this story also brought to my attention quite a bit of change from that first book, I will be revisiting my thoughts on this series as I go back and read what I have missed while waiting for book seven.

I have to tell you that other than the first book in this series, I haven’t read any of the other previous stories but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this one although it does have the spoilers for book two, it also wetted my appetite for more and since this story also brought to my attention quite a bit of change from that first book, I will be revisiting my thoughts on this series as I go back and read what I have missed while waiting for book seven.

Charity and Sylvia is the intimate history of two ordinary women who lived in an extraordinary same-sex marriage during the early nineteenth century. Based on diaries, letters, and poetry, among other original documents, the research traces the women's lives in sharp detail. Charity Bryant was born in 1777 to a consumptive mother who died a month later. Raised in Massachusetts, Charity developed into a brilliant and strong-willed woman with a passion for her own sex. After being banished from her family home by her father at age twenty, she traveled throughout Massachusetts, working as a teacher, making intimate female friends, and becoming the subject of gossip wherever she lived. At age twenty-nine, still defiantly single, Charity visited friends in Weybridge, Vermont. There she met Sylvia Drake, a pious and studious young woman whose family had moved to the frontier village after losing their Massachusetts farm during the Revolution. The two soon became so inseparable that Charity decided to rent rooms in Weybridge. Sylvia came to join her on July 3, 1807, commencing a forty-four year union that lasted until Charity's death.

Over the years, the women came to be recognized as a married couple, or something like it. Charity took the role of husband, and Sylvia of wife, within the marriage. Revered by their community, Charity and Sylvia operated a tailor shop employing many local women, served as guiding lights within their church, and participated in raising more than one hundred nieces and nephews. Most extraordinary, all the while the sexual potential of their union remained an open secret, cloaked in silence to preserve their reputations. The story of Charity and Sylvia overturns today's conventional wisdom that same-sex marriage is a modern innovation, and reveals that early America was both more diverse and more accommodating than modern society imagines.

Fascinating book

In this very readable and engrossing book, Rachel Hope Cleves uses a wide variety of evidence to help us understand how Charity and Sylvia, a presumably lesbian couple in early 19th century Vermont, may have experienced their lives. I found particularly interesting her analysis of the order in which Charity and Sylvia added rooms to their house as they had the money to expand, and how the increase in privacy and eventually the greater capacity for entertaining made possible by those additional rooms changed their relationships with their families and the people they knew in town. Cleves uses genealogy not merely for the obligatory introduction on her subjects' ancestry but as a way of showing how deeply interconnected New England families were and how names were passed down as a legacy of friendship and respect. She looks at land documents and discusses what is implied when a woman instead of a man held title to the land, and at how poems and hymns could become a symbolic language in a culture where these texts were common currency. As a church organist I understand the latter very well and have no quibble with the premise though I’d like to see the evidence for “Blest Be the Tie that Binds” as a wedding hymn. In this day and age, it is more likely to show up at funerals. Cleves discusses clothing as well, especially the relationship between tailoring and plain sewing in the hierarchy of trades. I wonder if any hints in the letters might suggest masculine forms in Charity’s clothing – the wearing of spencers, “habits,” or habit-shirts, or later, pelisses or redingotes, for example. These were all widely worn by women and would not have caused comment yet might have helped express Charity’s masculine persona. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in women's history, in early 19th century New England, and in how an intelligent and imaginative use of many kinds of evidence can provide new ways into history.

A Wonderful Story, Wonderfully Told

Relating history is so often dry and boring, as if seasoned with the dust of the libraries and archives in which it is held. Not so with Charity & Sylvia. Rachel Hope Cleves brings these strong women to life and includes the reader in their circle of confidence.

Historical accuracy is spot-on (or as near as it can be), which is hard enough to achieve with more recognizable figures. That Cleves has achieved it with two ordinary women, and at that, two women who lived what we imagine to have been a taboo life together, is a credit to her research abilities and her tenacity. But an accurate story can still be dry and boring, and the author avoided that pitfall beautifully. The reader can feel the life and vitality emanating from Charity & Sylvia, which makes their story all the more real, and relevant to today’s society: Love is timeless, and love is not gender dependent, is a message that comes through the years loud and clear.

I am happy that I was able to contribute in my small way to the telling of this story, and intensely proud that the blood of Sylvia Drake’s family flows through my veins. This book is a ‘must-read’ for anyone with a social conscience and anyone who needs to develop one.

Richly detailed, captivating biography of two women's 44 year marriage in the 1800s

Full disclosure: I had the pleasure of interviewing the author for a podcast. I found both Rachel Hope Cleves and her book to be exceptionally articulate, intelligent and engaging. It's not often I read a biography and find myself turning the pages as if it were a suspense novel. The attention to historical and personal detail in the lives and times of Charity and Sylvia is very impressive. (I did not know what an 'acrostic' was until I read this book!). It takes us into their time in a very visual, sensual way, and it's fascinating. The friendship romances women had with each other, the importance of poetry and subtlety in their lives, and the roles they were expected to play, which both Charity and Sylvia founds ways to break out of. It's also an insightful examination of what exactly constitutes 'the closet,' and how it often involves the unspoken approval and awareness of the communities people live it (which I think is still the case, especially in some communities where everyone knows someone is gay but doesn't 'know' it in the form of public acknowledgement). Anyway, this is a fabulous book about two women who determined to live lives on their own terms, and to live them together. Oh, and I love all the names people had back then, which came as another of the book's many surprises: Silence, Charity, Idea. I'd love to meet someone named Silence today. Very highly recommended.

About the Author
David Titterton is currently the technical leader of laser systems at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), part of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). He is a member of the Dstl College of Fellows (individual merit scientists), and is a visiting professor at the University of Cranfield.

John Weston is a Principal Scientist at Halliburton Sperry-Sun researching inertial/gyroscopic systems for the surveying of underground pipelines and well bores. He has worked in missile guidance and control, originally with British Aerospace plc. He received a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MSc in Systems Engineering.

Lots of good reference material

This book has the most comprehensive breakdown and analysis of the principles and modeling of accelerometer and gyro technologies I've seen in a book yet, though there are already some very good books on stable platform products. There's also a wealth of information on various coordinate systems used in the vicinity of Earth. While an entire chapter is devoted to MEMS, it would seem that the mechanization material (as well as alignment) is geared towards higher-end devices, in that many MEMS units I've encountered cannot readily identify any component of Earth's rotation, making much of the math superfluous for my application. There is a chapter near the end that deals briefly with aiding, but don't count on that being enough. A number of real-world periodic motions, both short-term (coning, sculling) and long-term (Schuler, Foucault), are identified, and the references to literature at the end of each section are invaluable in digging deeper. Kalman filtering is relegated to an appendix, but that is fine, as this book is significantly more oriented to applications; pick up a copy of Gelb if you need an intro to estimation.

A good introduction from the ground up. Concepts were easily conveyed to the reader. I'm much more comfortable with strapdown systems after reading this book.

Excellent book for beginners who have already started playing Crusader Kings II

The book narrates like a good AAR (without screen shoots) and describes the perils of a Duke (err, sorry, a Doux). In a humorous way, he is advised by the ghosts of former Doux who explain him (and the reader) what to do and why - an original way to educate the reader about the ideas behind his actions.

From time to time, I had to smile when he encounters events....in a battle, he suddenly loses his fear and for anyone who has played the game, it is obvious that he just experienced the event that gives the character the "Brave"-trait during a battle.

So, the target audience are (obviously) players of Crusader Kings II.

If somebody has just purchased CKII and wonders how to start the first game, he/she is probably better off going to youtube and to search for "Let's play crusader kings 2".

But for someone who just went through the first game (starting as an Irishman and founding the Kingdom of Ireland), the book is perfect.
Let us be honest: At that stage, a player is likely to simplify things.
For example, regarding the spymaster, I only made sure
- that the courtier with the highest intrigue value is spymaster
- that the spymaster is scheming in the home province to uncover plots at the court.

If you are at that point - having mastered to form Ireland and looking what is beyond this rather simple scenario - the book offers wonderful insights.
Furthermore, a player who has gone through this first game should be able to appreciate the wonderful ways how the author puts game events into this narration.

I am not sure if advanced players will appreciate the book - maybe such a reader would be bored by the advice from the ghosts. Or entertained. Or still find the one or other helpful information.

Anyway, for me, it was $3 in exchange for a few hours of nice entertainment and some interesting ideas how to play more complex games (starting as a vassal).

Neat project but additional purchases required

My twin boys (7 years old) LOVE Pokemon. I got one this felt kit as something beyond the cards and show. I really like the pattern. One thing I didn't realize though is that the kit only comes with supplies to make Pikachu (the yellow one). You'll have an extensive shopping list if you want to make the other characters.

Hours and Hours of fun for my kids. They are Pokemon fans so finding a craft for them to do that entailed Pokemon was a hit. Directions were easy to follow. My 8yr old was able to copy and cut templates on his own. We loved this kit. The only thing I wished for was extra material for them to do more than one of each character.
